Dwarf Bittern at Llanos Pelados, Fuerteventura 29/01/2018

Dwarf Bittern at Llanos Pelados, Fuerteventura
29/01/2018

We had seen him very briefly the day before (28/01/2018) at dusk

But on our 4th attempt we finally got to see him well. But in doing so we got drenched, as we approached the dam from the  Barranco de Rio Cabras (dried up river bed) below which he was fishing, as we approached the heavens opened up, hale, rain thunder and lightening, soaking us and the bird. He flew up into a near by Tamarisk bush. So we found a good advantage point to view him and awaited his re-appearance. We did not have to wait long, he walked out and perched on a dead branch over the water, then he proceeded to dry himself out for about 3/4 of an hour in full view. The only downside of this was that the sun was shining from behind him, so photographs were poor.

But after he had dried out he gave us a really good show.
Well worth getting soaked for !!!
